Sea of Hearts

Ella: I need to see him.

(doens’t look up)

Kendall: Name?

Ella: What?

Kendall: Your name?

Ella: Kendall, it’s me. I need to see Jacob. Kendall looks right up at Ella, coldly.

Kendall: Do you have an appointment?

Ella: Kendall, are you playing with me right now?! What is wrong with you. I need to see Jacob. Kendall smiles, mockingly.

Kendall: Oh, little Ella... I warned you. I told you not to get involved. Did he break your little heart?

Ella: Kendall, why are you treating me like this, we’re friends -

Kendall: Oh don’t get confused, honey. I put on a smile for every flavor of the week he has, but friendship? That’s not what this is. Oh, did you think you were the first? You’re looking at the first, sweatheart. And you won’t be the last either.

Kendall: 2. Just a poor little guppy swimming in an ocean full of sharks. Ella nods, taking it all in.

(leans in to Kendall)

Ella: Okay... Now you listen here. You may think you know me... you don’t. I’m not like the others. Break my heart? I have no heart. Now you can use your chip-glossed nails to pick up that phone and tell that limp fish boss of yours, that there is a shark out here in his waiting room. And it’s getting damn close to feeding time. Kendall is taken aback. They stare each other down.

Ella: I’m not leaving until he sees me. Finally, Kendall picks up the phone without taking her eyes off of Ella.

(into phone)

Kendall: Your two o’clock is here. Mmhm. I’ll send her in. She hangs up.

Kendall: He’ll see you now. Ella nods to Kendall in thanks and turns to walk away.

Kendall: Ella. Ella turns back to Kendall.

Kendall: Don’t take it easy on him. Ella smiles back.

Ella: Never would. Ella walks off. Kendall smiles watching Ella go, a newfound respect for her.
