Lily: Why are you being so nice?

Dev: What, a guy can’t buy a girl he likes coffee?

(taken aback)

Lily: Likes?

(smiles)

Dev: Cat’s out of the bag I guess. Come on, you know I’ve had a thing for you ever since -

(smiles a little)

Lily: Camp.

(smiles back)

Dev: Yeah. Lily nods her head and then gets cold again.

Lily: We were kids, Dev. A lot’s changed since then.

Dev: Not for me.

Lily: I’m no good for you. So just forget it, okay?

Dev: What? Why?

Lily: You don’t know anything about me. I’m not that little girl anymore.

Dev: Well then let me learn. Lily doesn’t respond.

Dev: Look, I know it’s been a while, but I do know you, Lily. You still have that same cute smile when you blush and look away. Lily blushes as she smiles and looks away. She sighs.

Lily: I’ve got a lot going on... You don’t want my baggage.

Dev: Why do you keep running from this? I’m not running.

Lily: Because if you knew the real me, you would.

Dev: Try me. Let me prove you wrong. Lily looks at him. He’s genuine. She struggles to start.

(that hurts her)

Lily: Camp may have been the last time I felt... like me. Soon after is when my mom started dating my step dad. He was... abusive. To put it nicely. Look, I don’t think I can talk about all the details, but let’s just say that all my issues started there. And then led to drugs, self harm... suicidal thoughts... My therapist says the way I reacted to all of it was... normal. Like that somehow makes it okay... Normal for someone who’s been - I have trouble with intimacy... relationships, you name it. Men, in general, I guess. Dev takes it all in. He tries to find the words.

Dev: Well... you’re in luck then. I’m pretty sure I’m still just a boy. No men here. Lily laughs. Dev gets sincere.

Dev: I’m sorry you went - are going through - all of that. I can’t imagine. Really. But I also can’t imagine why any of that would change the way I feel about you. Lily looks up shyly.

Lily: Really?

Dev: Look, I’m not saying we’re getting married... yet... or anything. I’m just saying... I’m enjoying my cup of coffee. Dev smiles at Lily. She smiles back.
