Context

A bartender wiping down the bar at 1:45 AM, talking to the last customer — a regular who is lingering.

Character Analysis

World-weary but not cynical. He sees people clearly because they reveal themselves at 2 AM. The observations are specific and generous. Play the tiredness physically but keep the mind sharp.

Last call was fifteen minutes ago but you're still here, so I'm going to assume you need the chair more than I need to mop. I've been behind this bar for six years. You know what I've learned? Nobody orders a drink at 1 AM because they're thirsty. They come here because home is too quiet, or too loud, or too honest. You? You come here on Tuesdays. Always Tuesdays. You order the same thing, you tip well, you check your phone exactly once and then put it face-down. I don't know your story. I don't need to. But I know you're not fine, because fine people don't come to a bar on a Tuesday and stay until the lights come up. So here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to pour you one more—on me. And then you're going to go home and deal with whatever you've been sitting here avoiding. Deal?
